Shoreham Port Supports Maritime Safety Week
The UK Maritime Minister, Nusrat Ghani MP, has launched the inaugural Maritime Safety Week, running from 9th to the 13th July, as part of the Government's efforts to share knowledge of safety practices and to highlight the work which is already being done across the diverse shipping industry to strive for safety excellence.
Paul Johnson, Director of Compliance at Shoreham Port commented “Health and safety is paramount at Shoreham Port and we are in full support of Maritime Safety Week, helping to raise awareness not just amongst professional mariners but all users of the maritime environment, from recreational mariners to beach goers.”
To continuously improve its health and safety culture, Shoreham Port regularly provides training courses for its staff in each department across the Port. All staff at Shoreham Port are trained in First Aid, which includes Defibrillator and Catastrophic Bleeding (Trauma First Aid). A total of seven defibrillators are deployed in and around the Port, three of which are situated in Shoreham Harbour Radio, on board one of Shoreham’s Pilot boats and their tug boat ‘Adurni’.
During the summer staff volunteer to carryout harbour boat patrols to ensure the harbour arms (the entrance to the Port) are free from tombstoning and any other dangerous activities. Staff are taught boat handling skills and attend the Royal Yachting Association VHF radio communications course for certification.
Paul added “We continue to work closely with the RNLI and HM Coastguard and support their open days, which help to make members of the public aware of the safety control measures in place to ensure all visitors to Shoreham Port are made to feel safe. We have in the past assisted the HM Coastguard delivering a maritime safety message to local schools during their assemblies and will continue to work with them when such requests are received.”
Shoreham Port is part of a wide network of maritime organisations supporting Maritime Safety Week. To see what other organisations have been doing to promote the week please search #martimesafetyweek on Twitter and join the conversation.

Footasylum set to be newest addition at Churchill Square
Lovers of stylish footwear and apparel are going to love the latest addition to Churchill Square, as Footasylum is set to be the newest store at the Brighton shopping centre.
Located in the former Zara unit, Footasylum is a new name in the retail landscape in Brighton and will be home to some of the hottest names in sportswear and casual fashion, including Nike, The North Face, New Balance, Converse, Vans, Under Armour and more.
Churchill Square Centre Director, Mark Buchanan-Smith, said he was thrilled that Footasylum would be the latest new arrival at the centre. “I’m delighted that we are able to add such a popular, well-known brand to our retail offering at Churchill Square,” said Mark.
“We’re always striving to ensure that we have the best possible retail options for our shoppers and in the past year we’ve welcomed a number of new names to the centre including Krispy Kreme and iSmash, along with Zara moving into a new, larger space, so I’m pleased that Footasylum will be joining the line-up here.
“It is an extremely exciting brand and a name that I’m sure will prove extremely popular, especially with some of our younger shoppers. I’m looking forward to announcing an opening date in the not too distant future.”
Anthony Potts, Retail Marketing Manager for Footasylum, said: “We pride ourselves on being a dynamic, adaptive and fast-moving business with a strong competitive position and great stable of brands. Brighton is a young and fashion-forward city so we’re delighted to be opening at Churchill Square. It is a fantastic site with access to a large proportion of our target customers.”
Footasylum will be opening at Churchill Square later this summer. For more information about the store and to find out about Footasylum’s job opportunities, alongside the latest updates from Churchill Square, shoppers should head to www.churchillsquare.com and stay tuned to the centre’s social media pages www.facebook.com/churchillsquare and www.twitter.com/ChurchillSquare

Habitat returning to Brighton with new city centre store
Iconic interiors brand announces plans to open new store as part of Hanningtons redevelopment
15 June 2018: Habitat has announced it is to launch a new Brighton city-centre store in October 2018. At 6,500sqft it becomes Habitat’s third largest store in the UK and forms part of Redevco’s redevelopment of the old Hanningtons department store on North Street. This marks the first new major stand-alone city-centre store that the brand has opened in 10 years.
Designed by the Habitat Design Studio, the new store design will be housed across two floors on ground and basement levels of 23-25 North Street, and will offer around 3,000 Habitat products across furniture, lighting, textiles and accessories. The new store will feature striking wrap around store-front windows leading onto The Lanes and will include an installation and events space which will house regular workshops, talks and installations from local collaborators.
“Habitat opened one of its first stores here back in 1969 so we’re thrilled to be returning to a city that has a lot of historical love for our brand,” comments Clare Askem, Managing Director of Habitat. “Returning to Brighton’s high street has always been a passion project for me so we’re delighted it’s the first new high street store that we’re opening and in such an important new development. This city has always had its own unique atmosphere which we wanted to make central to our return so we’re thrilled to be working on a collaborative project with local artists from the area to launch a celebratory collection of products especially for Brighton for when we open in October.”
Redevco started redeveloping the 1.3 acre site, which includes the former Hanningtons department store or ‘Harrods of Brighton’, in February 2017. The masterplan for Hanningtons Estate includes the creation of a new Lane, a new entrance to the Lanes from North Street, premium residential and office accommodation and the reconfiguration of existing shops to provide exciting new spaces for retailers, restaurants and cafes. Work is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
Andrew Foulds, Portfolio Director at Redevco comments, “Our vision for the North Street element of Hanningtons Estate was to extend the premium retail offer already found in East Street and attract completely new brands to Brighton. There are few brands that are as well-known or quintessentially British as Habitat. Launched by Sir Terence Conran in 1964, the retailer has always led the way with affordable, contemporary and stylish homeware.”
“It complements existing retailers such as Cath Kidston, Kurt Geiger, Flying Tiger, Sandro, Maje, Bobbi Brown and White Company perfectly. We also have deals with other exciting brands in solicitors’ hands, not just for North Street, but for the smaller units within the new Hanningtons Lane. Here the mix will be smaller, quirky but premium retailers, mixed with local names that Brightonians will be familiar with.”
