Single Use Plastics Ban to come in to force

Single Use Plastics Ban to come in to force

The single-use plastics ban will be introduced from 1 October 2023.

The government is introducing a ban on some single-use plastic items.

From 1 October 2023, businesses will no longer be able to supply, sell or offer plastic cutlery or balloon sticks. Polystyrene containers, plastic plates, bowls and trays are also banned in some circumstances.

The ban will apply to:

  • retailers

  • food vendors (including takeaway businesses)

  • the wider hospitality industry

The government defines ‘single use’ as meaning the item is meant to be used only once for its original purpose.

For the items included, the ban will cover:

  • online and over-the-counter sales and supply

  • items from new and existing stock

  • all types of single-use plastic, including biodegradable, compostable and recycled

  • items wholly or partly made from plastic, including coating or lining

You can find a full list of banned items and details of exemptions on the GOV.UK website.
