BHCLT announce Pre-Election Husting for Prospective Brighton & Hove Councillors

Finding an affordable place to live has become a national crisis. But Brighton and Hove is more affected than most cities.

According to Government data, house prices in the city have increased by 668 per cent since 1995, the largest growth in the country. That is more than double the UK average of 318 per cent

So what are the solutions?

BHCLT is a membership organisation, enabling and campaigning for community led housing development in Brighton & Hove. Our vision is of a city where all current and future residents, regardless of income, have affordable, secure and sustainable housing; where the people of the city have control and genuine choice in how they live and homes that reflect their diversity and creativity; and where the city makes the best of its resources.

As part of our work in the run up to the elections, we’ve been working on our ask: what we want parties to sign up to, that we think will best embed community led housing in the city.

We’re asking Brighton & Hove City Council to:

Use community wealth building as a way of looking at their own land and property;

Support public lending to co-operatives and community led housing groups to create more affordable homes in the city;

Keep identifying suitable sites for community led housing, including a larger site;

Let their empty properties to co-ops - or other non-profits - rather than private guardianship companies.

Check out our website www.bhclt.org.uk for more details about our ask and what it means
