IMPORTANT -Changes to Allergen Labelling Laws

From the 1st October 2021 new allergen labelling laws for food that is prepacked for direct sale (PPDS) will come into force.

What is PPDS food?

PPDS food is food that is packaged at the same place it is offered or sold to consumers. It is a single item, consisting of the food and its packaging, that is ready for presentation to the consumer before it is ordered or selected.

The new labelling will help protect your consumers by providing potentially life-saving allergen information on the packaging. Allergen labelling rules around open food remain the same.

Where should businesses start?

1. Businesses need to check if they offer prepacked products for direct sale (PPDS). Use this simple decision tool to help determine if the new rules apply to you https://www.food.gov.uk/allergen-ingredients-food-labelling-decision-tool

2. If your business sells or supplies PPDS food you need to take action BEFORE 1 October 2021 to comply with the law. Any PPDS food you sell will need to be labelled with the name of the food and a full ingredients list, with allergenic ingredients emphasised within the list.

To make it easy for you, the Food Standards Agency have provided information, including a helpful video and sector specific guidance on the changes and what you will need to do, see below:
