Brighton and Hove City Council is committed to preventing and tackling all the forms of abuse termed “violence against women and girls” or VAWG. The Government and National Council of Police Chiefs agree that the scale of harm to society is considered to be at the same level as terrorism.
The Council acknowledges that people from all walks of life and all communities can be affected by VAWG.
The Council’s vision is that anyone who lives, work or visits the city should be safe from harm. In January 2025, BHCC published its 2025-28 VAWG strategy which outlines the Council’s vision for tackling VAWG. The Council commissions a number of services, please see the attached PDF for these services, and the Community safety partnership directory lists support services for those who have experienced domestic or sexual abuse or anti-social behaviour and hate incidents. In addition, services such as the Employers Initiative on Domestic Abuse are dedicated to supporting employers and businesses to support staff affected by VAWG.
