Brighton Businesses Vote in Favour of £2.6m Investment Plan

Brighton’s city centre businesses have voted in favour of a £2.6 million private investment plan, backing a shared vision for a thriving, safe and vibrant city centre that residents and visitors will want to return to time and time again.

In the ballot, 65.8% of businesses voted in favour by number, with 72.6% supporting the plan by rateable value. The result paves the way for a new five-year programme of projects and services, funded through an additional levy paid by businesses in the city centre.

The plan was developed following an extensive consultation process throughout 2025, ensuring it reflects the priorities and needs of the local business community. Delivery will begin on 1 July 2026 and run for the following five years.

The first Brighton BID started in 2006, with successful ballots in 2011, 2016, 2021 and now 2025 (which also includes professional services above retail, leisure and hospitality businesses).

Key commitments within the new plan include the continuation of Brighton’s much-loved Christmas lights, alongside hanging baskets and summer decorations (including bunting and banners) that help to enhance the city centre environment. The programme will also focus on creating a safer shopping experience through continuing the City Centre Ambassador scheme, tackling crime and providing a visible, reassuring presence for businesses and customers alike.

A year-round calendar of events will also continue to help drive footfall and attract customers, as well as provide networking opportunities for members. This is also supported by an enhanced marketing service for the BID area’s 500+ shops, restaurants, bars, cafés and salons and professional services. In addition, the BID will continue to deliver a range of services designed to help businesses reduce costs and operate more efficiently.

Commenting on the result, Gavin Stewart, BID CEO, said: “We would like to send out a huge thank you to the businesses for their vote of confidence in this plan. Businesses are facing more challenges than ever, and we understand the pressures everyone is under, so this result is a real vote of confidence in working together to deliver a city centre that we can all be proud of.”
