Funding available to set up a workplace walking or wheeling project

Brighton and Hove City Council is offering funding to help set up, run and evaluate a walking or wheeling* project that would encourage more walking within the city. (*Wheeling refers to the use of wheelchairs or mobility aids)

Your project would aim to encourage staff to take up or increase their walking either to and from home or as part of their working day. Activities could for example include a regular lunch staff walk, walking meetings or walking to meetings or site visits. The project will need to involve a specific group of participants who commit to taking part to the entire project.

At least two of the following benefits need to be demonstrated:

• Improve mental and physical heath

• Increase social connections

• Improve accessibility and inclusivity

• Increase awareness of climate change and how walking can positively contribute.

The grant offered is up to £500 per project. Some match funding could be required depending on the project and size of the organisation.

Funding can be in spent on various incentives such as shopping vouchers and walking equipment such as umbrellas, waterproof over trousers, etc

Minimum participants: 6

Minimum length of the project: two months

Timescale: the project needs to take place between December 2024 and June 2025

Deadline to submit application: 15th November 2024.

The funding is provided by the Capability and Ambition fund managed by Active Travel England, a new government agency created by the Department for Transport. There is a strong requirement to provide monitoring and evaluation via “before” and “after” surveys which will be provided. Therefore, the project participants will need to commit to this evaluation to order to be able to take part. Applications are welcome from development trusts and charities, private sector as well as public sector organisations.
