City Event: Brighton’s economy – what’s ahead?

Almost a year ago, we met to ask what was next for Brighton’s economy. We discussed how to pull together to create a brighter future for our city with a focus on improving the welcome for visitors to boost income as we emerged from the pandemic and Brexit.

A year on, there is much to celebrate with investment in new development evident in the large number of cranes in the sky. But there are significant challenges on our minds; the increase in running costs for businesses; recruitment and retention; the cost-of-living crisis; reducing public sector finances; the need to reinvent the high street and more.

Businesses, employers, and city leaders are again making their plans with an uncertain future ahead and yet recognize the need, more than ever, to work together to support the city to be the best it can be.

On Thursday 2 March at 11.30am, online, the Brighton & Hove Economic Partnership, along with Brighton Chamber have brought our two organisations together to host our fourth special event where the wider business community can put their questions to local business and council leaders.

Chaired by Dean Orgill, Chief Exec and Partner at Mayo Wynne Baxter and Chair of BHEP. Our panel of experts each bring their own unique perspectives on the city, its challenges and the opportunities.

Donna Chisholm, Executive Director Economy, Environment and Culture at Brighton & Hove City Council, with an update on major developments and public finances.

Gavin Stewart Executive Director of BHEP and CEO of Brilliant Brighton (the city’s Business Improvement District on the city’s economy and what’s happening on our highstreets.

Andrew Comben, Chief Exec, Brighton Dome & Festival on the renovation and development project at Brighton Dome and the launch of this year’s Brighton Festival

Valentine Quinio, Senior Analyst at Centre for Cities and one of the report authors of the recent Cities Outlook 2023.
