Brighton tech startup wins Tech National Rising Stars award

Naurt’s hyper-precise satellite location technology has been recognised by Tech Nation as one of the best up and coming tech start-ups in the UK.

Brighton-based tech startup Naurt has been named a national Tech Nation Rising Star winner, having made it through the regional rounds.

The annual competition, designed to showcase the country’s best innovative, early-stage tech companies, selected the winners based on their value proposition, competitive advantage, market traction, team experience and potential to scale. Over 380 start-ups applied for the competition this year and just 10 won the coveted title.

As one of three companies representing the South East, Naurt won the top spot for their location optimisation software, which provides hyper-accurate satellite location technology. Naurt is part of the BRITE innovation project, a £10.5 million initiative part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and led by Plus X innovation hubs in partnership with the University of Brighton.

Commenting on their win, CEO and co-founder of Naurt, Jack Maddalena, said: “This competition aims to showcase and uplift start-ups from across the country that have technology to make huge differences in the world - so we’re naturally thrilled to be recognised in this way.”

Maddalena added: “Brighton has a great eco-system of support, from Elizabeth at Tech Nation to Plus X and the BRITE project, which has been instrumental in helping us get here and win this award. The BRITE project has helped us scale quickly and establish Naurt as an integral part of all smart cities of the future.”

Naurt was set up by Brighton-based entrepreneurs Jack Maddalena and Nicolas Slack, both in their twenties, in April 2020. Since then it has grown to a team of eight people, securing £500k in funding.

Naurt’s technology is more accurate than current GPS tracking. It can provide an exact location to submeter levels of tracking anywhere in the world, either indoors or outside. Naurt is a world-first location optimisation software company leading the way forward in location technology. Naurt works with a global and diverse client base from micro-mobility and last-mile delivery enterprises to drone-based solutions. The company optimises their location data through a plug-in-and-play toolkit for high-precision tracking. Naurt’s innovative software enables clients to input our solutions into their existing tech stacks easily and removes the need for additional hardware.

Naurt has installed a high-accuracy antenna on the roof of Plus X Innovation Hub. This allows them to compare optimal GNSS to the outputs from typical smart phones. Using all of the data they gather, they aim to produce new algorithms improving the performance of GNSS systems on typical smart phones. Having this possible by the installation will help refine the Naurt product while allowing the company to rapidly expand its customer base.
