ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A GOVERNOR?

Varndean College is a popular and successful Sixth Form College based in Brighton with around 2,000 students aged 16-19. Most students live in the Brighton and Hove area but some come from East or West Sussex, and others from overseas. We are an inclusive College, specialising in academic and general vocational education, offering a wide range of A levels, International Baccalaureate and vocational qualifications, in such subjects as Business Studies, Health and Care, Engineering.

We want to appoint 2 new Governors to join the Governing Body in October 2021. We are keen to secure greater employer involvement on the Board, whether from large corporations or small to medium businesses. We also want to strengthen the involvement of people from a diverse range of backgrounds (to reflect more closely the ethnic make up of our student body).

What do Governors do?

• Help shape the future development of the College

• Check that resources are being used properly and prudently

• Scrutinise the achievements and experiences of students, supporting continuous improvement in teaching and learning

• Ensure that the College operates in a way that safeguards students, provides equal opportunities, health and safety.

We are looking for people who can demonstrate

• an interest in the education of young people

• a commitment to an inclusive culture, that appeals to students with a wide range of abilities and talents

• a broad understanding of the complex issues involved in running a successful college

• a desire to contribute to the continuing success of our College.

In addition, we are particularly interested in welcoming people who have one or more of the following areas of expertise and experience

• finance and/or audit skills

• entrepreneurial skills and knowledge of the business world

• experience of working with organisations and groups serving black and minority ethnic communities

What is involved?

• Attending Governing Body meetings twice a term, in the evenings from 6 – 8.30 pm

• Annual participation in a Strategic Planning Day (if your work commitments allow)

• The opportunity to join a Committee that you are specially interested in.
