Brighton amongst top bank holiday weekend spending locations

Brighton amongst top bank holiday weekend spending locations

City in third place behind Portsmouth and Exeter in business sales forecast

New research reveals that Brighton is amongst the cities set to benefit the most from increased consumer spending over both May bank holiday weekends, according to new figures from Paymentsense.

Data from the company’s 70,000 small business customers across the UK, revealed that last year sales volumes were up 19% in Brighton over both May bank holiday weekends.

The city was pipped to the top spot by Portsmouth (up 26%) and Exeter (up 24%). Regionally, the South East saw the greatest uplift in trade (up 9.2%), followed by the South West (7.6%) and the North East (7.2%). London was much lower down the list at 2.2%.

Across the UK the average increase was around 6%, with garden-related spending enjoying the biggest lift (transactions up by 248%), suggesting that May is when many consumers start thinking about their outside spaces again - especially as the colder mornings and evenings start to subside.

The warmer weather also helped increase leisure spending across the country, as pubs, bars and nightclubs enjoyed a near two-thirds (60%) sales lift, followed by hotels at well over a quarter up (28%). Spending on take away and fast food was close behind with a 24% increase over the norm.

Although overall spending was up, not every UK sector is set to profit from the May bank holiday boost. Last year, dentistry business sales were down around 90% compared to their usual share of trade, followed by estate agents (down 76%), heating and plumbing-related retailers (down 71%), and builders’ merchants (down 62%).

Paymentsense also looked at spending trends over spring (Mar-May) last year and found the period is also important to UK motorcycle dealers and photography/camera retailers (both up 32% on average), service stations (up 26%) and golf courses (up 20%).

Guy Moreve, CMO, Paymentsense comments: “Despite recent uncertain times for small businesses, our early analysis suggests that the trend of extra consumer spending across both bank holiday weekends is set to continue this year.

“As spring turns to summer purchasing trends shift with the seasons: our figures suggest May, with its two bank holidays, is the real start of summer for many people - their attention turns away from practical purchasing towards outdoor activities and entertainment.

“Small business owners should also ensure they can take all forms of payments ahead of the upcoming May bank holiday, to really make the most of the expected increase in consumer spending. Given that consumers will only wait a few months for SMEs to start taking cards before they lose patience, it’s also an investment in the long-term success of a new or small business.”

SHOREHAM PORT UNDERPINS FUTURE OF GATEWAY CENTRE

SHOREHAM PORT UNDERPINS FUTURE OF GATEWAY CENTRE

Shoreham Port has contributed a significant donation of £20,000 to Shoreham Academy’s Gateway Centre this month as part of their Community and Stakeholder Request (CSR) funding. As a Trust Port, the Port strives to support their stakeholders and give back to the local community that it serves, often providing time, resources, and in some cases, financial help, to organisations that align with their CSR criteria.

The Gateway Centre is a school provision that aims to support the most vulnerable young people aged 10-16 within the local areas of Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate. Set up by Shoreham Academy five years ago, the facility helps students who, for a variety of reasons, find mainstream school a challenge, and has transformed the lives of young people who would otherwise not end up in education or training.

The provision provides a supportive environment for students experiencing deprivation or mental health issues, enabling access to closer staff teaching, support and guidance. Students are therefore able to gain the key qualifications, high levels of attendance and most importantly, confidence, to secure further study.

Jim Coupe, Principle at Shoreham Academy (pictured right) and member of Brighton & Hove Economic Partnership commented “We are incredibly thankful to Shoreham Port for their generous donation of £20,000 that will enable us to continue supporting the most vulnerable young people within our local community. The only way The Gateway Centre can currently remain open is to access funds additional to those available through the usual sources, meaning that the Port have financially underpinned the future of the Gateway for the next 12 months.”

Tim Hague, Director of Property and Development (pictured middle) commented “The Gateway is a crucial facility in the residential areas that are right on our doorstep here at Shoreham Port. As a Trust Port, we are committed to supporting our stakeholders, and the students attending the school are our ultimate stakeholders.”

Emily Kenneally, Communications Manager and Chair of the Port’s CSR committee (pictured left) commented “We are delighted to be able to increase our support to The Gateway Centre this year. Our CSR group had the pleasure of visiting this remarkable provision earlier this spring and we were blown away by the impact of the facility upon its students. We also hope that by making a contribution we will encourage other businesses to support local causes and to invest in the future of their nearby communities.”

SHOREHAM PORT TO HOLD ANNUAL PUBLIC MEETING ON 21ST MAY

SHOREHAM PORT TO HOLD ANNUAL PUBLIC MEETING ON 21ST MAY

The Port’s popular annual Public Meeting will be taking place on Tuesday 21st May this year at The Barn Theatre in Southwick. Light refreshments will be available from 6pm, with the presentation commencing at 6:30pm. This is an open event, and attendees do not need a ticket to attend.

The presentation, delivered by Shoreham Port’s Chief Executive, Rodney Lunn, will cover all aspects of the Port, from 2018’s performance and exciting plans for the year ahead, through to community support and engagement. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session with the Port’s Senior Leadership Team, providing an opportunity for stakeholders to voice their views and provide important feedback; a key driver of the Public Meeting.

There will be updates from all Port departments, such as the Marine team who have welcomed the delivery of the Port’s new tug boat Acamar, and celebrated becoming the UK’s #1 Scallop port in 2018, with 18% of scallop landed in the UK by UK fishing vessels arriving at Shoreham Port.

Meanwhile, the Port’s commercial Property estate continues to grow, with the addition of new business units at Lady Bee Enterprise Centre that will increase renewable energy and jobs, as well as the long-awaited refurbishment of Britannia Wharf; both of which are due for completion within the coming months.

The Operations department set a new record of over 450,000 m3 of timber handled by their committed and dedicated staff in 2018, ensuring that Shoreham remains a premium port for forest products in 2018.

The Port’s commitment to tackling climate change lead to the appointment of the UK’s Ports first Director of Infrastructure and Climate Change earlier this year, and the recertification of their Eco Port status.

Continuous efforts are being made by the Engineering team at Shoreham Port to protect the coastal area, with the Port engaging in a joint effort with Brighton and Hove City and Adur District Council to construct higher sea defences eastward along the coastline.

Attendees can also learn about Shoreham Port’s Trust Port status and the community support and stakeholder engagement activities they offer throughout the year – including their popular boat tours. The meeting will also provide an opportunity to obtain a copy of the Port’s newly published Annual Report.

School Students Celebrate Success at Awards Ceremony

School Students Celebrate Success at Awards Ceremony

The achievements of 100 students from Brighton schools were celebrated at an awards ceremony on Thursday 2nd May at Brighton i360.

The event was the finale to the Be the Change programme, an initiative co-founded by Graham Moore of metamoorephosis and Gary Peters of LoveLocalJobs.com, which aims to boost the aspirations and job prospects of young people aged between 13 and 14. Over the last six months the students have been taking part in a series of activities designed to improve hope, happiness, confidence, relationships, to change negative behaviour and to introduce them to career opportunities.

The students were congratulated and awarded certificates by the volunteer business guides alongside the Be the Change team. As the students received certificates and Be the Change ribbons, they applauded each other and reflected on the past six months. Many students stood in front of the gathered audience and revealed their feelings about moving forward with the skills they have learnt.

Vic Miller, VP of Global Comms at Brandwatch said: "It has been a real pleasure to work with the students, see them grow and make positive plans for the future. The change in their confidence and how open they have been to making changes is an inspiration."

Donna Ward, Detective Inspector from Sussex police said: “Over the last few months it has been truly inspirational to watch the positive change in those who have completed this programme. As well as the positive impact on the young people, I know that our business guides have also found the experience extremely enriching.”

Co-founder, Graham Moore of metamoorephosis said: “It has been an incredible journey not just for these amazing young people, but for everyone who has been involved – the teachers, the business volunteers and ourselves. Over the last few months we have been inspired by the way in which the students have engaged with us and their peers and as a result have become happier, more confident in their abilities and more excited about their futures.”

The students come from eight secondary schools in the area: PACA, Varndean, Blatchington Mill, Hove Park School, Longhill High School, Kings School, Dorothy Stringer and Cardinal Newman.

Be the Change Brighton, founded by Graham Moore of metamoorephosis and LoveLocalJobs.com, has been sponsored by Brandwatch (headline sponsor), Sussex Police (headline sponsor), American Express, Legal and General, Focus Group and Brighton & Hove City Council.

LOCAL BUSINESS TEAMS UP WITH LEWIS CAPALDI, BASTILLE’S DAN SMITH AND VICK HOPE TO HOST FIRST EVER STUDENT SERIES ON CLASSIC FM

  • LOCAL BUSINESS TEAMS UP WITH LEWIS CAPALDI, BASTILLE’S DAN SMITH AND VICK HOPE TO HOST FIRST EVER STUDENT SERIES ON CLASSIC FM

  • CLASSIC FM LAUNCHES REVISION HOUR TO HELP STUDENTS THROUGH BUSY EXAM PERIOD

Brighton-based organisation The Student Room, the UK’s largest online student community with 10 million users a month, has partnered with Classic FM, to launch its first ever series dedicated solely to students, to help them through their GCSEs, A-levels, Scottish Highers and university exams.

Each week, the programme will focus on a different theme, including managing exam stress, beating procrastination, last-minute cramming and dealing with exam panic.

Classic FM’s Revision Hour will be broadcast every Saturday night (9pm to 10pm) from 27th April to 15th June and will be hosted by brand new presenters to the station.

Lewis Capaldi, the UK’s most exciting new music artist; Dan Smith, lead singer of the multi-million selling band Bastille; and Vick Hope, from Classic FM’s sister station, Capital, will each host two programmes – with more presenters to be announced.

Lewis Capaldi hosted the first programme in the series on Saturday 27th April. Vick Hope will be hosting the next show on Saturday 4th May, where she’ll be playing her selection of the finest classical music to aid concentration, whilst also providing tips and support on how to manage exam stress.

In each episode, the presenter will play classical music by the all-time greats such as Mozart and Beethoven, to modern composers including John Williams and Ludovico Einaudi, whilst offering practical advice and tips from The Student Room – all related to the week’s theme. Further resources and help for students will be provided throughout the series at ClassicFM.com. The programmes will also be available via Classic FM’s Listen Again function and Global Player.

In the latest official audience figures, more than half a million under-25s tune in to Classic FM every week. Over the past three years during the exam period (April to June), there’s been an almost 50% increase in the number of 16-to-25s in full time education who listen to the station, with average hours up 75% in the same period.

Lewis Capaldi: “I’m absolutely buzzing to be hosting a revision show for Classic FM! Definitely could’ve used some advice like this a couple of years back when I was doing my exams! Anyone tuning into the show can expect lots of lovely sensual classical music delivered by my extremely handsome dulcet tones with some tips thrown in from people far more qualified than me (which isn’t difficult!). Make sure you tune in!”

Dan Smith: “On my shows, I’ll play some amazing music which will hopefully be an inspiring and motivating soundtrack to your revision. In and amongst that there’ll be some brilliant advice from The Student Room. I hope it will be an hour where students can have a think about exams and revision – and also put everything into perspective.”

Vick Hope: “When it came to revision and exams, I put a lot of pressure on myself, both at school in Newcastle and when I went to Cambridge for uni. I know well the stresses of studying and importance of looking after your wellbeing, which is where music was such an important crutch for me during my student days. This is why I’m excited to be part of Classic FM’s Revision Hour. I think it will be the perfect haven for students – great classical music combined with handy advice and tips. I know it would’ve been a help to me.”

Pete Langley, The Student Room’s director of study help: “As the UK’s largest online student community, we know that this period of time for students, as they prepare for and start their exams, can be stressful and overwhelming. Our partnership with Classic FM on this new series will help provide an additional outlet and haven for students. In a unique way, the series brings together classical music, to aid relaxation and concentration, with advice and tips from some of our leading experts on studying. Revision is all about balance and we believe everyone could benefit from giving themselves an hour every Saturday to tune in to Classic FM’s Revision Hour.”

Sam Jackson, Classic FM’s managing editor: “Every year during exam season, there’s a big increase in the number of students who listen to Classic FM. They often tell us that classical music helps them concentrate during revision and keeps them more relaxed before an exam. We know students can feel under pressure, so we are looking forward to launching our first ever series just for them, with the help of our friends at The Student Room. To host these groundbreaking programmes, it’s fantastic to welcome some exciting new voices to the station – Lewis Capaldi, Vick Hope and Dan Smith – with more to come!”

Classic FM’s Revision Hour started on Saturday 27th April at 9pm on Classic FM – available across the UK on 100-102 FM, DAB digital radio and TV, at ClassicFM.com, on the Classic FM app and the Global Player.

Brighton Students take on Snowdonia as part of inspirational project to raise career aspirations

Brighton Students take on Snowdonia as part of inspirational project to raise career aspirations

The LoveLocalJobs Foundation has launched its first employability themed outdoor pursuits adventure for sixteen lucky pupils from Brighton’s Dorothy Stringer High School. Sponsored and supported by The Straumann Group, students were given an opportunity to attend an outdoors pursuit centre, Dolawen, in Snowdonia. The five-day residential trip enabled students to get out of their comfort zones, experiencing hiking, gorge walking and weasling coordinated by E3 Adventures , and ultimately develop skills such as teamwork, leading and confidence which are essential for future employment.

Richard Baker, Deputy Head at Dorothy Stringer said “This trip has made a big impact on these children. They have made some good friendships and are much happier in school as a result. By all accounts it was a great success and we look forward to working with The LoveLocalJobs Foundation in the future to give more children such great experiences.”

In order to be a part of the trip, the students filled out an application and were then interviewed by representatives from The Straumann Group to provide them with a real insight into the process of how to get a job. The application process began in January and culminated with the outing 12th – 16th April. Throughout the trip, the team intertwined outdoor activities and employability skills, in order to provide the students with the confidence and hope they can secure future employment.

Debbie Womersley, HR Director at Straumann UK said “The Straumann Group are delighted to support and partner with The LoveLocalJobs Foundation to provide essential support to our local community. As a local employer, we believe that our local schools and children need to be supported and developed at a grass roots level, to give them a taste of what to experience within the world of work. This initiative was designed to build confidence and expose these students to challenges, helping them build strategies to overcome them and build, the confidence that comes from success.”

Gary Peters, Founder of The LoveLocalJobs Foundation said: “We created the foundation to give every day local kids the opportunity to thrive, to give them the skills needed to reach their full potential – both in life and professionally. Every day kids, just like you and I, just like we were all those years ago. I remember being given the opportunity to do this exact trip over 25 years ago and I loved every single second. It taught me to really push myself, to fall, to get back up and to work as part of a team – and most importantly to laugh, I loved every second. I’m proud of being able to give this opportunity to the guys from Dorothy Stringer, the school I went to many moons ago and I’m looking forward to many more trips in the not too distant future.”

The LoveLocalJobs Foundation was launched by Harry Redknapp in October 2018 and strives to help raise the aspirations of local young people. The Foundations initiatives aim to better connect education with the world of work and to enhance employability and soft skills via a range of inspirational experiences. The Foundation draws on a network of amazing organisations who generously support activities which help young people to realise their full potential and provide them with a stronger pathway for a positive future. The partnership with Straumann to enable sixteen pupils to attend Dolawen is a prime example of the work that can be done to support young people who deserve the opportunities.

This trip is only made possible through the generous sponsorship by Straumann, the support of The LoveLocalJobs Foundation, activity facilitation by E3 Adventures and the engagement from the participating school, Dorothy Stringer.

UK businesses called upon to help turn around the nation’s numeracy skills

UK businesses called upon to help turn around the nation’s numeracy skills

KPMG and National Numeracy are today calling on the UK business community to take action ahead of National Numeracy Day, taking place on the 15th May this year.

The campaign, run by National Numeracy, aims to help thousands of workers improve their numeracy skills and ensure that workforces have the necessary number skills to thrive in an increasingly challenging economic climate.

This follows the success of the inaugural National Numeracy Day in 2018, which saw more than 100 organisations joining together to reach the millions of people across the country who struggle with numeracy. More than 25,000 people signed up to test their skills and to start their journey towards greater confidence and skills with numbers.

Melanie Richards, deputy chair KPMG UK and founding business supporter of National Numeracy Day, said: “We’re incredibly proud that the first UK National Numeracy Day helped start a much-needed conversation about the importance of numeracy skills. We know that better confidence and greater ability with numbers can unlock significant value for individuals, businesses and the UK economy. It is vital that the business community continue to work together this year to build momentum on this critical issue.”

For a second year running, National Numeracy’s strategic partner, TP ICAP, the world’s largest interdealer broker, is pledging its support of National Numeracy Day and has urged other businesses to do the same.

Rebecca Shelley, Group Head of Corporate Affairs at TP ICAP, said: “Numeracy is an essential skill for everyone who works at TP ICAP and we are delighted to be supporting National Numeracy Day for a second year. Low levels of numeracy are linked to unemployment, low wages and even poor health. Through our support so far, we have seen the way empowering people with better numeracy changes lives for the better, contributes to less stressful daily living, and gives people the confidence to use numbers to get ahead in life. Collectively there’s potential for us to go so much further.”

As well as TP ICAP, organisations including Santander, Experian, NHS Health Education England, Provident Financial Group, UfI Charitable Trust, Education Scotland and the Scottish Government, have already joined founding supporter KPMG as lead supporters, with many more looking to sign-up. The campaign will also receive high profile backing from Martin Lewis, Bobby Seagull, Andy Haldane and Rachel Riley.

Mike Ellicock, Chief Executive of National Numeracy, said: “The fantastic support we received for National Numeracy Day last year showed us that there is a real appetite for change when it comes to tackling the nation’s negative attitudes towards maths and numbers. Although tackling a long-standing anxiety around numeracy can seem daunting, there are simple steps that everyone can take to improve, and businesses have a fundamental role to play in helping us achieve this.”

Organisations are encouraged to get involved with National Numeracy Day in three ways:

• Encouraging employees, suppliers and customers to take the National Numeracy Challenge, the free online numeracy assessment tool.

• Commit to supporting staff with numeracy skills, as part of either learning & development or training programmes.

• Find out more about taking part in the day and access further free resources from the National Numeracy Day website.

High fashion glasses and sunglasses brand Kirk & Kirk appoints Hugh Clark of Clarks shoes family as chairman

• Significant shareholder in Clarks - one of UK’s biggest private businesses

Brighton-based High fashion eyewear designer and manufacturer Kirk & Kirk has appointed Hugh Clark of the Clarks shoes family as its new chairman.

Hugh Clark is a family shareholder in the renowned C&J Clark Shoes, and acted as a non-executive director of the group for more than a decade. C&J Clark is now one of the UK’s largest private businesses, at number 37*, recording a turnover of more than £1.5bn last year.

Clarks Shoes is most famous for its iconic Desert Boot which it launched in 1950. The brand has also been sported by a number of celebrities including Pharrell Williams and Wu Tang Clan.

Prior to this, Hugh worked at Rohan Designs, including six years as Managing Director. Rohan Designs is a designer, supplier and retailer of outdoor clothing which reported a £30m turnover last year. Most notably, one of their jackets was worn by the first climber to the summit of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen.

Kirk & Kirk produces a distinctive range of luxury glasses and sunglasses. Chief Designer Karen Kirk’s designs have been worn by Elton John, Julia Roberts, U2 and Oasis, amongst others. The glasses worn by Gary Oldman in the Batman films were also designed by her and Prue Leith wore a number of Kirk & Kirk frames on the recent series of The Great British Bake Off.

Hugh Clark will be investing into the business through the private investor network Growthdeck, which recently launched an EIS-qualifying investment opportunity into Kirk & Kirk.

Kirk & Kirk will use Growthdeck’s funding to launch an online-only retail collection, design a new 2020 collection, and update the company’s ecommerce platform.

Growthdeck says that Hugh Clark’s extensive experience with large-scale, high-profile retail businesses will be a hugely valuable addition to Kirk & Kirk’s board as it scales up. Kirk & Kirk has increased sales by 43% over the year to £752,800 (year-end July 31st 2018), from £525,400 in 2016/17. Growthdeck says the company’s turnover is projected to reach £1.3m in 2019/20 and £6.8m by 2022/23.

Hugh is also chairman of the Institute for Family Business, which supports the growth of family-run businesses and lobbies on behalf of them.

Hugh Clark says: “I am very excited to be part of the development of Kirk & Kirk.

“This is an ambitious fast-growing business which has the potential to be a major player in the fashion accessories market, both in the UK and overseas. I’m looking forward to helping the Kirk family and their investors realise that ambition.”

Gary Robins, Head of Business Development at Growthdeck, says: “Bringing the experience and expertise of someone like Hugh Clark to help Kirk & Kirk expand is what sets Growthdeck apart from other investors. We’re thrilled that he has agreed to advise the business as it looks to scale up rapidly.”

BRIGHTON’S HANNINGTONS LANE IS NOW OPEN

BRIGHTON’S HANNINGTONS LANE IS NOW OPEN

Hanningtons Lane has opened to the public and visitors are able to walk down Brighton’s newest Lane for the very first time. Redevco and its main contractor Westridge have been working hard on the creation of the city’s new retail and cultural quarter for two years and retailers are now starting to move in and fit our their stores.

Andrew Foulds, Portfolio Director at Redevco comments, “This has been one of the most challenging but rewarding projects many of the construction team have ever worked on. Years in the making, the people of Brighton and visitors to the city can now see Morgan Carn’s designs brought to life.

“We hope that as retailers open and visitors wander through the new Lane, visit The Flint House roof terrace, see Puget’s Cottage revealed for the first time in 150 years and experience our green wall and exciting new art projects, they will appreciate how much thought and detail has gone into the project. We have sought to create spaces for modern retailers to thrive within an already iconic part of the city, but to respect the heritage and architecture of the area. We invite people to use the extended Easter weekend to come and discover it for themselves!”

The first tenant to open is The Flint House, a glamorous new dining concept from the Gingerman Restaurant Group. Hot on their heels will be independent ice cream maker Brass Monkey in a few weeks time. Watches of Switzerland and Oliver Bonas are also busy fitting out new stores on North Street.

One of the first retailers attracted to the redeveloped Hanningtons Estate was Habitat in November. They joined great existing brands such as White Company, Kurt Geiger, Sandro, Maje, Cath Kidston and Flying Tiger.

The new Hanningtons Lane features a uniquely designed environment taking the best of the Lanes – every shopfront, elevation and colour has been individually designed to provide a really immersive and engaging experience, with retailers sitting alongside new residential apartments and office space.

Andrew Foulds adds, “The Lanes attract shoppers from all over the World and our retailers recognise that this is a fantastic and unique place to spend time and shop. Brands are investing in Brighton and Hanningtons Estate because they have bought into our exciting vision for this area. We are in detailed discussions with a number of retailers - who are visiting site to see the quality of the environment and space available - and expect to announce more new names shortly.”

If you are a compelling brand who could add to a carefully curated retail mix, our leasing team want to hear from you. Please contact simon.morris@gcw.co.uk or dbrady@klmretail.com.

SHOREHAM PORT CELEBRATES ECOPORT STATUS FOR SIXTH YEAR

Shoreham Port has been re-certified as an EcoPort this month, six years after its initial Port Environmental Review System (PERS) certification was awarded in 2013. Presented by the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) the PERS accreditation means that Shoreham Port continues to be a member of the EcoPorts network, the main environmental initiative of the European port sector. Shoreham Port is one of only two PERS accredited ports in the UK, and one of twelve UK ports who hold EcoPort status.

The aim of EcoPorts is to increase awareness about environmental challenges, deliver compliance with legislation and to demonstrate a high standard of environmental management. Members of the EcoPorts network are encouraged to share environmental knowledge and be proactive in their efforts to protect and maintain the environment.

Shoreham Port is committed to preventing negative impacts on the environment while maximising the positive social, environmental and economic opportunities of a thriving Port. It continually assesses its environmental impact to develop strategies that will improve the Port’s carbon footprint, appointing Tony Parker, the first Director of Infrastructure & Climate Change at a UK port in January. The Port’s programme of green initiatives include a new LED lighting programme, increased water quality monitoring, a staff cycle-to-work scheme, and going paperless – including the introduction of a new quarterly digital PORTlife newsletter.

Paul Johnson, Director of Compliance commented “A lot of hard work goes into maintaining and continually improving our environmental credentials year on year. This ensures that we meet the very high standards set by the European Sea Ports Organisation ‘EcoPort’ scheme and can be awarded with the prestigious EcoPort status for a third time.

“Everyone at Shoreham Port has their part to play when it comes to improving the wonderful environment within in which we work. I am immensely proud of the Shoreham Port EcoPort title as it demonstrates our commitment to not only reducing our carbon footprint and tapping into free and alternative renewable energy sources, but ensures that our bio diverse environment is sustainable for the years ahead and that all future generations will continue to enjoy a fantastic experience when visiting, working, or passing through Shoreham Port.”

The Let's Do Business Networking Breakfast and Piglet's Pantry

The Let's Do Business Networking Breakfast and Piglet's Pantry

Brighton Chamber is hosting a Pop-up Breakfast at this year’s Lets Do Business Expo on Thursday 13 June at the American Express Community Stadium from 8.00-9.45.

The guest speaker is Jo Hunter, founder of Piglet’s Pantry. Jo Hunter started Piglet’s after quitting her corporate role to set up a little bakery, using local produce wherever possible. But her pies were too good for the bakery to remain small for long.

In 2011, Piglet’s beat more than 100 other pie-makers to supply the pies at Brighton & Hove Albion’s new Amex stadium. The company has had to move several times as it grew, taking on new clients, and now works from a massive production kitchen in Worthing. From here, it supplies all manner of sporting clients including the Oval, Twickenham, and Chelsea FC, as well as non-sporting ones too. And it has branched out into other products, making everything from sausage rolls to cake.

Jo will be talking about what Piglet’s did, how they did it and what their future plans are.

Book here to join the breakfast before you visit the expo which opens at 10am

One in three people in declining jobs are holding out for redundancy before switching careers

  • One in three people in declining jobs are holding out for redundancy before switching careers

  • Figure doubles to almost two in three among employees under 35

34% of UK workers at the sharp end of changing labour demands are waiting to be made redundant before switching careers, according to a survey released today by professional training provider Learning People. This figure rises to 62% among those aged under 35, with younger employees also reporting more pay freezes, shrinking teams and zero-hour contracts.

The study interviewed 1,000 employees in job functions and sectors experiencing declining demand according to UK labour market projections. Namely administrative and secretarial roles, agricultural employees, machine operatives and skilled trades in manufacturing, land transport workers and sales and customer service staff in the retail sector.

Reflecting on the past five years, more than two in three (67%) complain of shrinking teams and increasing workloads, 59% have experienced pay freezes and almost half (45%) say redundancies have become commonplace.

Across these sectors, young employees present a bleaker picture of working life than older colleagues. 64% of employees under 35 report pay freezes, compared to just over half (57%) of older workers. Similarly, 65% of younger employees have seen an increase in zero-hour contracts in contrast to just 39% of older workers, and 58% say redundancies have become a regular occurrence, compared with 40% of over 35s.

While almost one in 10 (9%) employees in declining labour markets have either already begun retraining or plan to start soon, around a quarter (23%) want to switch careers but don’t know what else to do.

When asked what they’d consider as a second career, IT and coding jobs top the poll, with 12% of respondents choosing this if they were to switch now. Charity and voluntary roles are next at 10%, with business, consulting and management at 9%, accounting and banking at 8% and creative arts and design at 6%.

In terms of how redundancy money would be used, top priorities amongst those surveyed include investing in savings, holidays, home renovations and paying off debts. Courses to retrain also feature, especially for those under 55.

Mike Appleby, Head of Global Talent Community at Learning People comments:

“Ten years on from the financial crisis many employers are still in a cycle of redundancies, especially those adapting to automation. If you think redundancy’s coming it can make sense to hold out for a payout, but don’t stand still in the meantime. Update your skills while still in your old job. Getting in on the fast-rising tech industry is not as daunting as many think and can often re-focus your current role – an admin exec conversant in cyber security risks is much more valuable than one who isn’t.

“A big barrier is the lack of support and advice available for people who want to make a career change. Most people approach this by Googling but that can often lead to further confusion. People end up on job adverts which show their experience doesn’t fit the bill, regardless of their transferrable skills. Instead, find networking opportunities and talk to people in a career you’re interested in. Understand what you’re passionate about, what opportunities are local to you and engage organisations that suit, rather than seek out exact roles. This will help identify what training is needed to make the jump.”

Mark Rhodes, Marketing Director at UK employment agency Reed, adds:

“The good news for those wanting to switch career to IT and coding is the whole technology sector is booming and IT skills are in high demand. We’ve seen an 8% year-on-year rise in vacancies so far in 2019, contributing to a 35% rise in technology vacancies since 2016”.

47-year-old Charles Karanja from Cambridge retrained with Learning People in 2017 after an administration career and is now a SOC Support Analyst at Telefónica. He comments:

“While I enjoyed my old administrative job, I felt stuck and unsure of my long-term prospects. I looked into cyber security because I’ve always been fascinated by data breaches and hacks. When the ‘WannaCry’ hack affected my wife’s job, she phoned, asking when I was going to make the move.

“Don’t let a lack of experience put you off. Think about your transferrable skills, the things you’re good at and passionate about. Then study. Despite having absolutely no tech experience I was able to secure my current position once I finished my course. I learn more every day as the world of tech is constantly changing. That constant change makes me feel I’ve found a role with a future.”
